Experts warn "unwary consumers" that water-damaged vehicles are expected to flood the market in the next year following such natural disasters as the Mississippi River crest. Flood-damaged vehicles are expected to wind up on the used-car market in the U.S. One professional inspector says consumers can protect themselves by checking for telltale signs of flooding; he once found "two fish under a backseat" in one inspection.

Heavy spring rains swelled rivers such as the Mississippi and flooded numerous towns. You might have stayed dry, but there's still a risk of being affected--if you wind up with a flood-damaged car.

We always hear the advice that you should take a used car to a mechanic for an inspection before you buy it.

You've found the car of your dreams but unfortunately, it's on the other side of the country. Conventional wisdom tells you not to buy it until you've physically inspected it. Can you still make sure it's not a lemon and put it in your driveway at the right price?
